Construction began on The Stamey Store in 1925 in what was an art-deco style architecture reminiscent of grand buildings in big cities at the time. In 1927, the doors swung open with a full line of goods from New York, Baltimore, and all over the country.
The grand opening, which included a jazz orchestra, was the talk of the town, and more than 1,000 people from all walks of life attended. It was quickly nicknamed, “the Big Store,” by locals, and was the center of Upper Cleveland County until its doors closed in 1995.
Now, that same excitement has returned with the opening of The Historic Stamey Event Center. The ground floor of the event venue has been completely restored to reflect and preserve the architecture that has been so adored by generations of people in Cleveland County. In January, 2019 the Stamey Store building was listed on The National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior, one of only three in Upper Cleveland County. Among the original features are wood mill work, maple hardwood floors, beautiful wood and lead glass storefront windows, and vintage tin ceilings restored to pristine condition.
It is operating as a full service event center with a maximum seating capacity of 300 in the ballroom. The building features a bride and groom suite, lounge area, bar area, catering kitchen, and a large dance floor.
It’s the perfect venue for weddings, receptions, reunions, parties, conferences, corporate eventsand more. The goal of the Historic Stamey Store Event Center is to once again provide a gathering place for the community as it was for over a hundred years.
